Ontwaken op de late zondagochtend is vaak een langzaam proces. Away From Here (CNR Music) van de Limburgse liedjesschrijfster Stevie Ann is zo’n album om de ogen langzaam bij te mogen openen. Prettige jazzy en soms zelfs ‘folky’ nummers van een ambitieuze artieste met oorstrelende potentie.
Niet zo lang geleden was de jonge Limburgse nog studerende aan de Tilburgse Rockacademie. Die studie zei ze echter gedag om zich volledig te kunnen focussen op haar carrière. Inmiddels speelde ze al meerdere malen in Londen, waaronder ook rond de tijd van de aanslagen op verscheidene ondergrondse lijnen in de Britse metropool. In Nederland mocht ze vier avonden lang het voorprogramma van Paul Carrack vormen. Op dat moment zelfs nog zonder album. Vooruitgesnelde roem van het door Rowwen Hèze-accordeonist Tren van Enckevort geproduceerde album maakt dat de naam van Stevie Ann intussen her en der al wat lichtjes doet branden.
De in uitstekend Engels gezongen popliedjes komen uit de keel van een pas achttienjarig nachtegaaltje. Stevie Ann werd geboren als Stéphanie Struijk in het Limburgse Roggel. In drie jaar tijd schreef ze grotendeels op eigen kracht een volwaardig debuutalbum bij elkaar. De inspiratie hiervoor deed ze op bij Sheryl Crow en Alanis Morissette, maar wellicht nog wel in grotere mate bij singer-songwriters uit de zestiger jaren van de vorige eeuw. Geen wonder dat bijvoorbeeld Joni Mitchell in haar muziek doorklinkt.
Away From Here telt twaalf nummers die bijzonder sferisch en divers klinken. Met name Leaving Next Time en Away From Here, de albumopeners, klinken als heerlijk poppy tikkende klokjes. Het rustige en Norah Jones-achtige The Poetry Man wordt de nieuwe single die de release van het album mede moet ondersteunen.
Op de hoes van Away From Here kijkt een vastberaden en volwassen ogende meid de toekomst recht in de ogen. Weg van hier. Verder dan nu. Met name in de rustigere nummers lijkt Stevie Ann dan ook weg te dromen. Nog zoekende naar zichzelf. Het zoetste snoep is altijd het meest lastig te verkrijgen, zo bezingt ze in de afsluiter Overdone. Maar niet lastig genoeg om de poging dan maar meteen te staken, want Stevie Ann lijkt vastbesloten om net als provinciegenoot Rens Blom de sprong over de hoge lat te gaan halen.
